Understanding a Cat’s Behavior: Why Does It Rub and Scratch Against You?

Posted on May 12, 2025 By Emerson Solomon No Comments on Understanding a Cat’s Behavior: Why Does It Rub and Scratch Against You?

Cats are known for their mysterious, sometimes aloof behavior, making it tricky for owners to understand them. One of the most puzzling actions is rubbing or “bunting.” This gesture is usually affectionate and territorial. Cats have scent glands on their faces and tails that release pheromones, which they rub onto people or objects to mark as familiar and safe.

This behavior can also be investigative—cats may rub to gather information or signal a need, like food or wanting to go outside. However, excessive or aggressive rubbing could indicate health issues such as allergies, infections, or neurological disorders and should be checked by a vet.

Other behaviors, like tail wagging or exposing their belly, are often misunderstood. A wagging tail can mean annoyance, not happiness, and showing the belly is a sign of trust, not always an invitation to pet. Learning a cat’s cues builds stronger bonds and helps ensure their well-being.
