Matt, a thirty-year-old man who became paralyzed after being struck by a speeding car, is nervous about meeting Hannah, the woman he has fallen in love with online. After four months of conversations, he arranges their first date at a café, bringing flowers but hiding the fact that he uses a wheelchair. When Hannah sees him, she suddenly recognizes him, whispers that it cannot be him, and runs away. Matt is devastated, believing she has rejected him because of his disability.
Three years earlier, Matt had pushed his girlfriend Rachel out of the path of an oncoming car at a crosswalk, suffering a spinal cord injury himself. Rachel visited him twice in the hospital before abandoning their relationship. Matt rebuilt his life through rehabilitation and began sharing cooking videos anonymously. Hannah contacted him after trying one of his recipes, and their friendship gradually became romantic. Afraid of being rejected again, Matt never told her about his wheelchair.
After Hannah disappears, Matt contacts Rachel and a former hospital nurse named Nancy, hoping to understand why Hannah reacted so strangely. Rachel recognizes Hannah from the hospital, while Nancy confirms that Hannah had cared for him and still feels guilty about what happened. Matt becomes increasingly confused, especially when he learns the driver responsible for the accident was never identified.
The next morning, Hannah visits Matt’s apartment and reveals that she was his nurse on the night of the accident. While helping gather his belongings, she discovered an engagement ring hidden in his jacket. Rachel found it and realized Matt had planned to propose, but Hannah became ashamed of her growing emotional connection with him and requested a transfer. She believed Rachel and Matt would eventually marry and blamed herself when their relationship ended.
Matt explains that Rachel made her own decision to leave and that Hannah was never responsible. He then remembers someone holding his hand during his first terrifying hours in the hospital. Hannah tearfully admits it was her. Matt had spent three years believing Rachel had comforted him, when the person who stayed beside him was actually Hannah.
Finally free of their misunderstandings, Matt and Hannah discuss their fears and feelings honestly. Hannah explains that she fell for him through their conversations and later recognized the same man she had once comforted. Matt admits he hid his disability because he feared rejection. They hold hands, just as they did in the hospital, and share a kiss. The woman who had once promised not to leave him is finally beside him again, and neither of them runs away.
