Sandra Prescott discovered that an amendment to an SUV lease carried a forged version of her signature. After comparing it with her genuine signature, she immediately recognized the deception, having spent thirty-one years examining handwriting at the assessor’s office. Preston, the dealership employee assisting her, revealed that the amendment had been notarized by a former salesman named Doyle. Even more troubling, the phone number associated with the additional driver belonged to Sandra’s daughter-in-law, Brooke.
Before Sandra could respond, Brooke entered the dealership alongside Dr. Marcus Hale, a cardiac surgeon. Marcus confessed that he and Brooke had been having an affair for two years. Brooke had told him her marriage was over and that the SUV was hers to share, so he contributed $300 monthly toward the lease and requested permission to drive it. Brooke had forged Sandra’s signature, while Doyle had notarized the document for $100. Marcus also explained that the white sedan frequently parked in Sandra’s usual spot belonged to him.
The affair explained why Brooke had wanted Sandra away from the dealership and the house early in the mornings. Trevor, Brooke’s husband, worked nights at a distribution center and usually returned after seven, allowing Marcus to park his sedan before dawn and leave before Trevor arrived. Trevor then appeared at the dealership after receiving Brooke’s text, still wearing his safety vest. Having overheard the confession, he asked Brooke whether she had ever loved him or had only wanted the car. She could not answer.
Trevor also admitted his own deception. He had contacted the dealership hoping to purchase the SUV in his name so Brooke would never discover that his mother was paying for it. For three years, he had concealed his poor credit because he was ashamed that he could not afford his lifestyle. Sandra realized that the situation involved not only Brooke’s betrayal but also her son’s painful struggle with financial insecurity and honesty.
Sandra instructed Preston to void the amendment, remove Marcus as a driver, and terminate the lease that afternoon. Preston forwarded the forged notarization to the company’s compliance department, and Doyle subsequently lost his notary license. Sandra chose not to pursue criminal charges against Brooke because she wanted the truth exposed rather than revenge.
Brooke moved out that month, and Trevor filed for divorce. He rented Sandra’s spare room, took a second shift, and purchased a used hatchback with his own savings. Sandra told him that the thirty-eight lease payments she had covered, totaling $26,000, were a gift he never needed to repay. From then on, Trevor joined her for Sunday dinners, beginning a more honest chapter of their relationship.
