Foods to help control uric acid levels

An increase in uric acid in the body can cause ailments such as fever, joint infections, skin cracks, bone erosion, and cellulitis in soft tissues. Historically called the “disease of kings,” it affected those who consumed excessive alcohol and meat, both rich in uric acid precursors.

While certain foods raise uric acid levels, others help reduce them. Here are some natural remedies that may help:

Berries: Red and blue fruits like blueberries, strawberries, and cherries contain proanthocyanidins and anthocyanidins—bioflavonoids that help prevent collagen damage and reduce inflammation caused by uric acid.

Apples: High in malic acid, apples neutralize purines—compounds found in foods like anchovies, onions, beans, and beer—that break down into uric acid.

Pinto Beans: These are low in purines and rich in folic acid. Chickpeas and black beans also contain small amounts of purines but are generally safe.

Parsley: A natural diuretic, parsley helps lower uric acid through its quercetin and kaempferol content. It can be added to meals or natural drinks.

Lime: Lime juice acts as a natural solvent for uric acid. Drinking the juice of half a lime diluted in water twice daily can provide relief.
