Amid the devastating floods in Texas’ Guadalupe River region, stories of courage have emerged.
One such hero was 27-year-old Julian Ryan, a father of three. When flash floods overwhelmed his home on July 4, Julian acted quickly to help his fiancée Christinia Wilson, their children, and his mother escape.
In the chaos, Julian broke a window to create an exit but severely injured his arm, cutting an artery. Despite heavy bleeding, he stayed focused on getting his family to safety before collapsing. His final words were, “I’m sorry, I’m not going to make it. I love y’all.” Hours later, his body was found. A GoFundMe campaign in his honor has raised nearly \$88,000.
At Camp Mystic in Kerrville, counselor Emma Foltz protected 14 girls during the floods. Despite recently losing her mother, Emma remained calm and courageous. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry called her “a true light in the storm,” and she has become a symbol of quiet strength.
Two more heroes, 19-year-olds Silvana Garza Valdez and María Paula Zárate from Mexico, helped rescue 20 children at a nearby Christian camp. As floodwaters rose, they wrote each child’s name on their arms to keep track and led them to safety while offering prayers and reassurance.
Governor Greg Abbott praised their bravery, calling their actions lifesaving. These stories highlight the resilience and selflessness amid the tragedy.
