With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of this extraordinary singer. When you find out who he is, you will cry

Raul Malo, the celebrated frontman of The Mavericks and one of Americana’s most recognizable voices, has died at 60 after a battle with cancer. His passing, confirmed by Rolling Stone, marks the loss of a musician whose talent, warmth, and artistic spirit shaped multiple generations of fans.

Malo co-founded The Mavericks in Miami, blending country, Latin, and rockabilly influences into a sound that was unmistakably their own. His rich, emotive vocals earned him the nickname “El Maestro,” and they became the centerpiece of the band’s identity. The group landed 15 entries on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, including their 1996 hit “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down,” which peaked at number 13.

Fans admired Malo for his remarkable consistency and passion. Many described him as a performer who elevated every song he touched. His dynamic presence, along with the contributions of bandmates Robert Reynolds and Paul Deakin, helped establish The Mavericks as one of the most compelling live acts of their era.

Malo’s health struggles began in June 2024 with a colon cancer diagnosis, followed by surgery to remove a liver tumor and later an operation on his colon. In September 2025, he revealed he was also fighting leptomeningeal disease, a rare condition affecting the brain and spinal cord. Despite these challenges, he remained open and reflective about his journey.

Born in 1965 to Cuban immigrants, Malo often spoke about how his family’s history shaped his values and artistry. He credited their search for freedom and opportunity as a profound source of gratitude and inspiration throughout his life.

After The Mavericks initially disbanded in 1999, Malo pursued a successful solo career before reuniting with the band years later. His final album with them, Moon & Stars (2024), revisited early, unreleased material and showcased his deepened vocal range.

By September 2025, worsening health forced the band to cancel the remainder of their tour. Malo passed away on December 8, 2025, surrounded by widespread admiration and love from fans.

The Mavericks honored him with a heartfelt tribute, celebrating the voice and spirit that defined their sound and touched countless listeners.
