Volcano Eruption Threatens 300,000 US Residents
Hundreds of thousands of Americans are on high alert as Mount Spurr, a 11,070-foot volcano near Anchorage, Alaska, shows signs of an imminent eruption.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has reported over 100 earthquakes beneath Mount Spurr weekly in February and March, with more than 3,400 recorded since April 2022. Scientists warn that the volcano could erupt explosively, sending ash up to 50,000 feet into the atmosphere.
While Anchorage residents—81 miles away—may not hear the eruption, ashfall remains a serious threat, as seen during the 1992 eruptions when ash blanketed the city. Volcanic lightning and thunder are also possible due to friction within the ash cloud.
Authorities urge nearby residents to prepare with face masks, goggles, and emergency supplies. Volcanic ash poses health risks, including respiratory issues and severe eye and throat irritation, according to the International Volcanic Health Hazard Network (IVHHN).
