Urgent warning to

Australians planning to travel to or through Qatar are being urged to exercise a high degree of caution. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has raised Qatar’s travel alert to Level 2 due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The updated travel advice highlights potential risks, including flight disruptions, sudden airspace closures, and possible protests. While DFAT is not advising against travel entirely, it warns that the risk level in Qatar now exceeds that of major Australian cities.

Travellers are urged to stay informed, avoid demonstrations, and monitor local news closely. Authorities emphasize that even peaceful protests can turn unpredictable or violent.

The alert comes amid rising conflict between Israel and Iran. In response, Australia has closed its embassy in Tehran and urged citizens to leave Iran immediately.

More than 1,200 Australians remain registered for assistance to leave Israel as violence continues in the region.

Adding to the uncertainty, former U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted at possible American involvement in the conflict, fueling concerns of broader regional instability.

DFAT’s warning reflects growing global concerns about travel in and around the Middle East and urges Australians to reassess non-essential trips.

Travellers are encouraged to register with the Smart Traveller service and have contingency plans in case of sudden changes to flight paths or airport operations.
