It wasn’t supposed to be there. I froze on the porch, coffee trembling in my hand, staring at something that looked like it belonged in a nightmare. My chest tightened as panic took over.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. Every instinct told me to run, yet I stayed, locked in place, staring at the twisted, fleshy shape near my door.
It looked wrong—unnatural. My mind raced with impossible thoughts. Was it alive? Watching me? I slowly stepped back, afraid to get any closer.
When the first wave of fear passed, curiosity crept in. I grabbed my phone and zoomed in, unwilling to approach. The texture looked raw and torn, disturbingly organic.
It didn’t resemble anything familiar. Not fruit, not fungus, not roadkill. I checked the roof, the railings, the nearby trees, searching for any clue how it ended up there.
Hours passed. I sent photos to friends, posted online, and waited. The guesses only made it worse—each theory stranger than the last.
Finally, a neighbor who hunts gave me the answer. It wasn’t anything supernatural. It was a piece of deer hide and meat, likely dropped by a coyote during the night.
The fear faded, replaced by something quieter. While I slept safely inside, life and death had played out just steps from my door—and I had never even known.
