A 21-year-old Texas woman, Joyce Badon, tragically lost her life after floodwaters swept through the house she was staying in over the July 4th weekend. Joyce and three friends—Ella Cahill, Reese Manchaca, and Aiden Heartfield—were spending the holiday at a country home along the Guadalupe River when “torrential rains” caused the river to rise rapidly, flooding parts of Kerr County.
More than two dozen campers and counselors are among the 107 confirmed dead across six counties, with many others still missing. Joyce’s father, Ty Badon, said the group was last heard from during a call with Aiden’s father. Aiden had said, “I have to help Ella and Reese,” before the phone went dead. Soon after, the house was completely swept away.
Joyce’s mother, Kellye, shared a heartbreaking plea on Facebook, revealing their cars had been washed away and the group couldn’t reach the attic in time. She urged for prayers and hoped to pick up her daughter soon. Tragically, that hope faded.
Volunteers, including Joyce’s parents and friends, searched tirelessly along the river. One victim was found high in a tree. Joyce’s father stumbled upon the body of a young boy during the search.
On July 7, Joyce’s body was found. Her mother paid tribute to her “beautiful” daughter, later sharing a photo of a rainbow over their home, saying, “All is well with my soul.”
Reese’s body has also been found, but Aiden and Ella remain missing. Joyce’s final message read: “We’re being washed away.”
