Teen Dies After School Bus Collision – Family and Community Devastated

A tragic accident in Panola County, Mississippi, has claimed the life of 17-year-old Katelyn Ray after her vehicle collided with the rear of a South Panola School bus early Wednesday morning.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol confirmed the crash occurred around 7:15 a.m. on Highway 15 near Highway 6. Katelyn was on her way to pick up her older sister from work when the fatal collision happened.

Katelyn’s mother, Shelia Ray, shared that their final conversation was filled with love—an ordinary exchange that became a heartbreaking goodbye. When Katelyn didn’t show up at her sister’s workplace by 7:30 a.m., concern quickly turned into panic.

Courtney Pettit, Katelyn’s sister, tried reaching her repeatedly and eventually took to social media, posting a desperate plea for help in finding her missing sister. Not long after, the family received the devastating call from highway patrol.

Authorities say the impact was severe, as Katelyn’s car slammed into the back of the school bus. Thankfully, no children on the bus were injured, but the accident took a tragic toll on Katelyn’s young life.

Stephanie Pettit, Katelyn’s aunt, reflected on the family’s shock and sorrow, describing the unimaginable pain of losing someone so vibrant and full of life. Katelyn was taking GED classes at the WIN Job Center and was proud of her role as an aunt.

Katelyn had only received her driver’s license two months prior. Her sudden death has left the Panola County community grieving deeply, as friends and loved ones come to terms with the heartbreaking loss.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash as tributes pour in for the beloved teen.
