In 2010, Army officer Todd Weaver was killed by an IED during his second tour in Afghanistan. He was just 26 years old, leaving behind his loving wife, Emma, and their 9-month-old daughter, Kiley, who would grow up without memories of her father. The young family from Hampton, Virginia, was devastated, but Todd’s final act of love would soon give them comfort.
After Todd’s funeral, Emma received his laptop from Afghanistan. Two days later, she opened it and noticed two Word documents on the desktop: one labeled “Dear Emma” and the other “Dear Kiley.” Her heart stopped as she realized what they were — farewell letters Todd had written in case he didn’t make it home.
In his letter to Emma, Todd poured out his love and faith. He told her not to grieve too long but to find strength and happiness again. “Although I may not be here right now, take comfort in the fact that I am watching over you,” he wrote. He reminded her that their life together had been full of joy and that their daughter was his greatest blessing.
Todd encouraged Emma to stay strong for Kiley and to remind her of her father’s love. “Her smile and laughter represent all that is good and beautiful in this world,” he said, asking Emma to tell Kiley that he would be watching over her from heaven.
He ended his message with hope and faith: “Never be afraid to do what you need to do to be happy. Much better times are coming.”
The second letter, addressed to baby Kiley, was filled with tenderness. Todd told her how much he loved her and how leaving her was the hardest thing he had ever done.
He urged her to be kind, work hard, and cherish her mother. “You have such a bright and beautiful future ahead of you,” he wrote. “Remember, your Daddy will always be proud of you and will always love you.”
Todd Weaver’s final words continue to inspire — a timeless reminder of love, sacrifice, and faith that endures beyond loss.
