Newly public FBI interview reports have revived allegations from a Democratic whistleblower concerning Sen. Adam Schiff. The whistleblower, who worked for Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee for many years, claims that Schiff encouraged leaking classified information during the Trump–Russia investigation. These allegations, if pursued by prosecutors and proven in court, could carry significant legal and political consequences. Former U.S. Attorney Brett Tolman noted that each alleged leak of classified information could carry fines of up to $250,000.
The whistleblower says he first informed the FBI in 2017 that Schiff had discussed leaking information that could harm then-President Donald Trump. According to the account, the whistleblower objected, calling the idea unethical, but was told others believed they would not face consequences. The whistleblower also reported that Schiff had political expectations tied to a potential Clinton administration, though that claim has not been independently verified.
The source additionally suggested that Rep. Eric Swalwell might have been involved in transmitting information. The whistleblower says he was dismissed from his position after bringing his concerns to the FBI, though no official explanation has been made public. Allegedly, the whistleblower repeated his claims to the FBI in 2023 but saw no action taken.
Tolman emphasized that if prosecutors ever pursued the case and substantiated the allegations, penalties could vary significantly. He noted that the intent behind any classified leak plays a key role in determining criminal exposure and that conspiracy-related charges could apply depending on evidence. He clarified that the known information does not appear to meet the legal threshold for treason.
Critics of the FBI have argued that the agency has been inconsistent in investigating politically sensitive matters. Some commentators claim the bureau has overlooked alleged misconduct by prominent political figures while rigorously pursuing other investigations.
Schiff has not publicly commented on these recent allegations. In the past, he has denied leaking classified information and maintained that accusations against him were politically motivated.
