I had been cleaning my husband’s girlfriend’s bedroom every Tuesday for an entire year without realizing who she was. After twenty-eight years of marriage, I discovered that Robert was having an affair with Caroline Whitmore and secretly planning to take our money and property.
When I confronted him, he panicked. He begged me not to reveal our marriage to Caroline, then tried convincing me that everything was a misunderstanding. I refused to argue and went home, where he was already waiting with coffee and apologies. But his explanations about the property documents only made me more suspicious.
I contacted my sister Dee and our attorney, Evelyn Price. They discovered suspicious paperwork carrying my signature, including documents I had never knowingly signed. Even worse, Robert appeared to have arranged a $750,000 life insurance policy connected to me without my knowledge.
Caroline eventually arrived at Dee’s house carrying a box of photographs and documents. Inside was a wedding picture of Robert with another woman, Anna Mitchell. Caroline explained that Robert had claimed Anna was dead, but she had recently discovered that Anna was still alive.
The truth was even more shocking. Anna had married Robert in 1994, divorced him in 1997, and had a daughter named Emily, now twenty-nine. Robert had hidden his previous marriage and his daughter from me throughout our entire relationship.
Caroline also produced a black notebook containing financial figures, property details, and my name. Beside it was November 2, just three days away. I remembered Robert’s invitation to spend a weekend at an isolated cabin and suddenly understood why the date frightened me.
Our attorney advised us to preserve every document and contact the authorities. We also discovered that Caroline had begun questioning Robert after noticing suspicious signatures on the insurance application. She finally admitted that she had helped organize some paperwork without understanding his intentions.
Then Caroline sent me another warning: Robert had a document in his briefcase that he desperately needed me to sign, and it wasn’t about money. She also mentioned something that had happened during his fishing trip three years earlier.
I realized I could no longer trust the man I had shared twenty-eight years with. With Dee and Evelyn beside me, I decided not to attend the cabin getaway, sign another document, or confront Robert alone. This time, I would let the authorities uncover the truth before he could hurt me or take anything else.
