My Family Asked for My Late Son’s College Fund — I Said Yes, But Set a Condition

Posted on July 22, 2025 By Ashton Miles

Scott, a grieving single father, recounts the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ben, who died after a long battle with a heart condition. While many friends and family drifted away after Ben’s passing, one person remained—Daniel, Ben’s 16-year-old best friend. Throughout Ben’s illness, Daniel was a constant presence, offering companionship, support, and even artwork to lift Ben’s spirits.

Before his death, Ben asked Scott to promise that Daniel would receive his unused college fund, believing Daniel deserved it more. Though heartbroken, Scott agreed. After the funeral, Daniel continued visiting weekly, sharing memories and quietly helping Scott heal. When Daniel mentioned he might not afford college due to financial struggles at home, Scott knew it was time to keep his promise.

At a family dinner, Scott announced his decision to give the $25,000 fund to Daniel. His relatives reacted with shock and disapproval, arguing that the money should stay within the family. Scott confronted them, reminding them of their absence during Ben’s final years, while Daniel—a teenager—showed up consistently, offering real love and support.

As tensions rose, Scott challenged his family to recall details about Ben’s final day. None could answer. Daniel, however, had been there and knew everything. Scott stood firm, declaring he was honoring the one person who truly cared.

Three weeks later, Scott helped Daniel move into college. Seeing Daniel pursue engineering and art, just as Ben believed he should, filled Scott with peace. In Daniel, he found not just his son’s best friend—but a chosen family.
