In a tragic aviation disaster, Air India Flight 171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing at least 241 people. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, slammed into a medical college campus just minutes after departing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
Scenes from the crash site were devastating—burned-out classrooms, charred bodies, and wreckage strewn across rooftops. A large section of the aircraft’s tail was found embedded in the college building.
Initially, authorities believed there were no survivors. Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik confirmed the recovery of 204 bodies and warned that local residents may also have died due to the densely populated crash site.
In a shocking update, Malik later announced a sole survivor: 40-year-old Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a British national originally from India. Ramesh, traveling with his brother Ajay, recounted the terrifying experience. “Thirty seconds after takeoff, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed,” he told local media. “When I got up, there were bodies all around me.”
Ramesh is now hospitalized, anxiously awaiting news of his brother. “Please help me find him,” he pleaded.
Among the victims were London couple Jamie and Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek, who posted a cheerful farewell video before boarding. “Going back happily, happily, happily calm,” Fiongal had said.
While investigators search for answers, Ramesh’s survival stands as a faint glimmer of hope in a sea of sorrow. Our thoughts go out to all the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
