Former President Joe Biden made a rare public appearance at an LGBTQ+ event in Washington, where he urged members of the community to “get up and fight back” against Donald Trump’s second presidential administration, according to The Guardian.
Speaking at the International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference, Biden reaffirmed his long-standing support for LGBTQ+ rights while accepting a lifetime achievement award recognizing his contributions to the community.
In his speech, Biden criticized Trump and Republicans, saying they are trying to “derail and distort” the fight for equality by portraying it as something “scary” or “sinister.” He emphasized that equality is a core American value.
“There is nothing more American than the notion of equality,” Biden said, stressing that dignity and fairness should apply to everyone, regardless of identity.
Biden referenced his role in signing the Respect for Marriage Act during his presidency and accused Republicans of “weaponizing people’s basic identity.” He framed the issue as one of simple decency, respect, and equal treatment under the law.
Reflecting on his past evolution on same-sex marriage, Biden joked about getting into “good trouble” along the way. He also addressed LGBTQ+ youth directly, telling them, “You are heard, and you belong.”
However, attention also focused on a verbal stumble during his remarks. While urging leaders and advocates to continue the fight for equality, Biden struggled briefly with his words, prompting renewed public concern about his health.
The concern was heightened by Biden’s disclosure earlier this year of a cancer diagnosis. Since Trump returned to office in January, Biden noted, federal agencies have rolled back protections affecting LGBTQ+ people, particularly transgender Americans.
Closing his remarks, Biden described those policy changes as attacks on fundamental American values, reminding the audience that the nation was founded on the idea that all people are created equal and deserve dignity throughout their lives.
