Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was taken to a Washington, D.C., hospital on Tuesday after experiencing an allergic reaction, according to a spokesperson.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin confirmed the incident, stating, “Out of extreme caution, she was taken to the hospital. She is awake and getting better.”
CNN reported that Secretary Noem has remained alert and in contact with her security team throughout the ordeal.
Several Secret Service officers were seen stationed at various entrances of the emergency room where Noem was admitted, underscoring the seriousness with which the situation was handled.
Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, was appointed Homeland Security Secretary by Donald Trump after his election. She has been leading efforts to reform emergency response procedures and intensify immigration enforcement.
The allergic reaction occurred a day after Noem and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited Fort Detrick, an Army base in Maryland. The base is under FBI investigation following a reported biohazard incident.
Kennedy recently testified before the Senate, revealing that two contractors were involved in an incident that led to the temporary shutdown of a lab at Fort Detrick.
While details about the cause of Noem’s reaction remain unclear, she is reportedly recovering well. Further updates are expected from DHS in the coming days.
