Unlike earthworms, hammerhead worms have a flattened body and a distinct head shape that can look like a hammer or fan. This unusual design makes them easy to misidentify at first glance.

They are also predators, feeding on small invertebrates, including earthworms. That means they play a very different role in the garden ecosystem than the beneficial worms that improve soil health.

In the end, what surprised me most wasn’t just the creature itself, but how quickly I assumed I knew what it was.
