Christmas Eve at the Whitmore penthouse looked perfect from the outside. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath chandeliers, expensive wine flowed freely, and Eleanor Whitmore proudly hosted another “elegant” family dinner in Chicago’s wealthy Lincoln Park neighborhood. But beneath the polished smiles and designer clothes, Claudia had spent seven years enduring quiet humiliation from her husband Mark’s family — especially his cruel, entitled sister Vanessa.

Claudia tolerated the insults aimed at her accent, her Mexican upbringing, and her “lower-class” background because she wanted peace for her five-year-old daughter, Lily.
