Leonard returns home after nine months away and finds Gloria’s legal pad filled with accusations. Several dates place him hundreds of miles away. He also discovers a women’s shelter card, realizing his wife has planned to leave.
Gloria involves neighbor Mrs. Alvarez, claiming Leonard scares her. Yet Alvarez never witnessed threats. Gloria gives her instructions about what to say. Another note claims Leonard watched the house at 2:13 a.m., although he was asleep.
At the shelter, Leonard learns Gloria described him as controlling. He admits questioning her and using money or silence during arguments, but denies threatening her. His travel receipts contradict accusations recorded in Gloria’s notebook.
Leonard discovers Gloria’s brother, Dale, is helping her. Dale prepared a protection-order request accusing Leonard of threatening Gloria when he was in Salina. A note instructs Gloria to keep Leonard calm and use the shelter card.
Gloria admits Dale told her she needed proof Leonard would not let her leave. Leonard acknowledges making divorce difficult through money and the house. Though he never harmed her, he realizes his behavior was selfish and their marriage broken.
At court, Leonard submits evidence while Mrs. Alvarez provides Gloria’s note. A shelter worker confirms Gloria sought help but did not know the dates were false. The judge dismisses the protection order after verifying Leonard’s whereabouts. Dale disappears.
Outside court, Gloria says she has nowhere to go. Leonard offers two nights at a motel and says lawyers should handle the house. He makes clear he is helping her leave, not saving their marriage. Gloria reveals an entry.
The note says Gloria should cry and accuse Leonard of threats if he requests divorce. Leonard says he wants a divorce and will not lie about why. He gives the notebook to the sheriff, returns home, and takes his travel mug.
