‘Homeless and Hungry’: The Sign Held by a Homeless Woman I Took In, Only to Be Kicked Out of My Own Home the Same Day — Story of the Day

I thought I was helping a homeless woman. I had no idea who she really was—until my husband saw her in our kitchen and whispered, “Mom?”

That morning, I woke heavy-hearted—not just from pregnancy, but from the weight of living with Carter. Cold and controlling, he’d changed after getting everything he wanted—our house, my job, my trust.

After another tense morning, I left to clear my head. Outside the grocery store, I noticed a woman pushing a cart with worn belongings. Her sign read, “Homeless and Hungry.”

Something about her dignity stopped me. I offered help. She smiled. “If I listed everything I need, we’d be here all night.”

She explained how her son kicked her out for being a burden. Her words struck deep. “Some people only love you when you’re useful.”

I knelt beside her. “I think I understand.”

She looked at me closely. “Husband?”

I nodded, tears burning.

She just said, “I’ve been there.”
