From 90 To 43: Latest Polls Expose Overstated Trump Popularity

A recent poll challenges House Speaker Mike Johnson’s claim that Donald Trump is 90 percent popular.

On CNBC, Johnson praised Trump’s approval ratings, stating, “There’s never been a president that high,” citing a supposed 90 percent approval rating. However, a July 17 CNN poll reveals only 42% of Americans support Trump, and just 37% believe he sets the right goals.

Other polls tell a similar story. Reuters and IPSOS found 41% of voters back Trump’s administration, while a poll from The Economist showed 55% disapprove of the president. Rasmussen Reports offered a more positive number, with 50% supporting Trump, the highest in recent years.

Johnson’s 90 percent figure appears to come from Republican support alone. According to the CNN poll, 88% of Republicans approve of Trump, a number Johnson seems to have rounded up without including other groups.

Comparatively, past presidents have enjoyed higher approval ratings. Bill Clinton reached 66%, Barack Obama peaked at 59%, and Ronald Reagan at 63%. Nixon holds the record for the lowest approval rating at 24%.

Trump’s approval during his first 100 days was the lowest in six decades, though Nixon’s overall rating was remarkably low as well.

While Trump’s supporters remain loyal, broader public opinion shows a more divided picture than Johnson’s optimistic claims suggest.
