Florida man woke from coma, gave chilling statement about his girlfriend, then died

Daniel Waterman, originally from the Syracuse area of New York, was critically injured on Super Bowl Sunday 2025 in a serious crash along Interstate 95 in Flagler County, Florida. He was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his pregnant girlfriend, Leigha Mumby, when an argument reportedly escalated during the trip.

According to reports, the dispute intensified quickly, and the vehicle veered off the road, crashing into a tree. The impact left Waterman with life-threatening injuries, while Mumby and the unborn child survived. Waterman was placed in a coma, and his condition remained uncertain for months as doctors worked to stabilize him.

When he briefly regained consciousness, Waterman gave statements to investigators that significantly changed the course of the case. He alleged that Mumby intentionally caused the crash during the argument, claiming she acted out of anger and drove erratically before the collision.

Investigators cited court documents indicating that the conflict may have been triggered by a pregnancy-related revelation and a text message that led to heightened emotions. Waterman also stated he attempted to escape the vehicle but was unable to do so before the crash occurred.

Mumby initially told authorities she could not remember the incident. However, she was later arrested and charged with reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and aggravated battery. Following Waterman’s death on October 8, 2025, due to complications from his injuries, the charges were upgraded to vehicular homicide.

In the aftermath, Waterman’s family has focused on securing custody of the surviving child. They have stated that he wanted the baby to be raised in New York with his relatives, ensuring the child remains connected to his family and background.

The case continues to draw attention due to the serious allegations and tragic outcome, highlighting the devastating consequences that can arise from moments of conflict behind the wheel.
