The UK is facing an unusually large outbreak of scabies, with over 3,600 cases reported in hospitals, according to the NHS. Doctors urge anyone with symptoms—such as red spots, intense itching (especially at night), and a raised rash—to seek treatment promptly.
Scabies is caused by mites and spreads through close skin contact. It commonly affects areas like between fingers, wrists, waist, underarms, groin, and bottom. In children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, it can appear on the head, neck, palms, and soles. A severe form, crusted scabies, causes flaky rashes and is highly contagious.
Prof Kamila Hawthorne of the RCGP notes that stigma often stops people from getting help. However, untreated scabies can worsen skin conditions or cause infections.
The outbreak is made worse by treatment shortages, so early diagnosis is crucial.
