Chilling text from pregnant teen found dead in boyfriend’s backyard

Tragic Death of 18-Year-Old Kylee Monteiro

Kylee Monteiro, just 18 and 11 weeks pregnant, was allegedly killed by 22-year-old Gregory Groom. Prosecutors say he stabbed her and buried her in his grandparents’ backyard, attempting to hide the crime with cut trees and brush.

On August 7, Kylee sent her sister Faith a chilling text: “He threw me on the ground, pulled my hair, and strangled me. My phone’s at 4 percent—if I die, it was Greg.” The next morning, Groom reported her missing, claiming she had left after an argument about her living arrangements.

Her sudden disappearance alarmed her family. Kylee had been active on social media, recently announcing her pregnancy on TikTok and describing Groom as treating her “like gold.” Faith later said, “I know there’s been speculation of domestic abuse, but that wasn’t the case in their relationship.”

Authorities launched a large-scale search on August 8. Groom was quickly charged with assaulting a pregnant person, domestic assault, and witness intimidation. As investigators prepared to search his grandparents’ property, Groom allegedly confessed.

According to prosecutors, he admitted stabbing Kylee twice in the neck and once in the chest with a kitchen knife during an argument. The knife broke, and he dragged her body about 20 yards before burying it five feet deep. Groom even drew a map leading police to the grave. Despite this, he pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail until his September 10 hearing.

Kylee had just graduated from Attleboro High School. Friends and family described her as loving, kind, and full of life. “She was so loving and caring, and I love her so much,” said family friend Kira Schofield.

Her sister Faith added: “I lost my sister. I will never see her again, say goodbye, or tell her I love her.”

A vigil, Vigil of Hope for Kylee Monteiro, will be held Saturday, August 23, at 7 p.m. at Redway Plain & The Veterans Memorial Gazebo in Rehoboth.
