The quiet town of Gateshead was shaken by the tragic death of 14-year-old Layton Carr. Reported missing last Friday, Layton’s body was later found in a burned-out building at Fairfield Industrial Park.
Police have arrested 14 children, aged 11 to 14, in connection with his death, which is being treated as manslaughter. All have been released on bail as investigations continue.
The derelict building, a common teen hangout in Bill Quay, has become a symbol of unimaginable loss. Layton’s family described him as a “cheeky, happy lad” with a heart of gold, devoted to his mother and sisters.
His school community is heartbroken, and a GoFundMe for his family has raised over £18,000.
Detective Chief Inspector Louise Jenkins urged the public to avoid online speculation and respect the legal anonymity of the suspects.
Layton’s memory lives on in the love he inspired.
Rest in peace, Layton — you were deeply loved.
