Excessive Urination: When to Worry
Frequent urination, or polyuria (over 2.5 liters/day), can be harmless or a sign of an underlying issue. Common causes include drinking too many fluids or diuretics (coffee, tea, alcohol), diabetes, urinary tract infections (UTIs), diuretic medications, prostate enlargement in men, anxiety, or kidney problems.
While occasional increases are normal, persistent urination with symptoms like extreme thirst, fatigue, pain, weight loss, or unusual urine color/odor may signal a serious issue. For example, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to sugar being flushed out through urine, while UTIs cause bladder irritation and discomfort.
If you experience unexplained frequent urination, consult a healthcare provider. Early diagnosis can prevent complications from diabetes, kidney disease, or infections.
Bottom line: Pay attention to your body. Frequent urination isn’t always a problem—but if it’s persistent and comes with other symptoms, don’t ignore it.
