Following Brandon Blackstock’s death on August 7, 2025, at age 48, Reba McEntire’s past remarks about her stepson have resurfaced. In 2021, Reba spoke with neutral support about Brandon’s divorce from Kelly Clarkson, expressing love for both and refusing to take sides.
Reba, who was married to Brandon’s father Narvel Blackstock for 26 years, always considered Brandon family despite their separation. She said, “He’s been my son forever. I love them both with all my heart.”
Kelly Clarkson also reflected positively on her relationship with Reba after finalizing her divorce from Brandon in 2022. The two stayed close and continued to text regularly. Kelly described Reba as a mentor and friend who understood her struggles, especially given Reba’s own divorce experience.
Despite their divorce, Kelly and Brandon worked together professionally on The Voice and maintained a civil relationship for the sake of their children.
When Brandon fell ill with cancer, Kelly remained protective of him and their two children, River and Remington. A source revealed that she focused on supporting the kids and never spoke negatively about Brandon in front of them.
Kelly postponed her Las Vegas shows in early August due to a family health emergency, just before Brandon’s passing.
Brandon’s last public appearance with family was in March 2025 at Rodeo Houston, where he was seen with Reba and his half-brother Shelby.
After his death, fans supported Kelly’s decision to prioritize her children during this difficult time. Despite a rocky past, she expressed devastation over the loss and honored Brandon’s role in their lives.
Kelly has openly discussed processing grief and finding strength after loss through her music and interviews.
