Why you shouldn’t leave a charger in an outlet when not in use

If you’re like me, you’ve got a few bad habits you keep meaning to fix. Some are serious—like smoking or junk food binges—but others are just lazy habits we overlook. Mine? Always leaving my phone charger plugged in.

It seemed harmless—until I came across a post explaining why it’s not. Even when not in use, chargers draw small amounts of power. That means higher electricity bills and unnecessary energy use. Plus, constantly plugged-in chargers wear down faster, and sudden voltage changes can lead to overheating—or worse, a fire hazard.

If you’ve got kids or pets, there’s also the risk of them playing with exposed chargers or outlets, which is a safety concern.

Most modern chargers are low-risk, sure, but why chance it? Unplugging takes two seconds and saves money, reduces risk, and—bonus—makes your partner stop nagging. So, do you leave your charger in the wall? Be honest.
