Florida man who survived alligator attack caught on drone video: ‘I shouldn’t be alive’

Florida Firefighter Survives Alligator Attack in Lake Thonotosassa

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida firefighter and paramedic is recovering after surviving a terrifying alligator attack while filming an instructional video in Lake Thonotosassa, near Tampa.

J.C. La Verde, who runs an athletic training company, was swimming in the lake two weeks ago when a 12-foot alligator attacked him. The dramatic moment was captured by a drone flying overhead.

“As soon as I felt the teeth, I immediately knew,” La Verde said. “I tried to open its jaws. It was confused, just as I was, and then it let go.”

Despite his injuries, La Verde managed to swim to a dock and was helped by a good Samaritan. Remarkably, he called 911 himself while being driven to the hospital, saying he didn’t want to add stress to the woman helping him.

He underwent a six-hour emergency surgery and will require additional operations. For now, he wears a helmet to protect the injured right side of his head.

Sitting beside his wife, La Verde reflected on the incident with gratitude. “If people want to see this any other way than a legit miracle, it’s silly of you,” he said. “I shouldn’t be alive.”

He also offered a heartfelt message to others: “Find your God. Life is scary, but you don’t have to carry the load alone.”

La Verde’s bravery and calm under pressure have inspired many, reminding people of the fragility of life—and the strength of the human spirit.
