Jenna arrived within an hour after the narrator’s injuries, documenting her wrist and scalp before taking her to urgent care. The next morning, the narrator returned home and cooked only one dish, plain chicken soup, despite preparing a feast for Margaret’s twenty-six guests.
At noon, with everyone seated, the narrator placed the soup before Margaret and explained that it was the only feast she owed anyone. She then played a recording capturing Daniel’s voice and Margaret’s laughter behind a locked door, leaving the entire room stunned.
Nobody touched their food. Margaret’s sister became pale, while Daniel tried to grab the narrator’s phone. Jenna’s colleague stopped him. Calmly, the narrator announced that she was leaving and that her mortgage papers were already with her attorney.
She also revealed that the recording had been securely saved in three places. Margaret’s untouched Earl Grey sat nearby as the narrator walked away, refusing to argue or defend herself further after enduring years of mistreatment.
Later, Margaret’s sister explained the reason behind her behavior. Margaret had spent her twenties working as a cook for a wealthy Columbus family, sleeping near the kitchen and being humiliated during holidays. She had never forgiven the powerless woman she once was.
When Daniel married a hardworking woman who earned her own money and could not easily be controlled, Margaret saw everything she had been denied. Instead of confronting her own pain, she punished the narrator for representing the freedom she had never experienced.
The divorce was completed quickly and quietly. Daniel moved into his mother’s spare room, while the judge reviewed the recording and reached a decision without delay. The narrator sold the apartment and moved into a smaller home overlooking a garden.
Margaret eventually sent a brief letter containing no excuses, only the truth her sister had already explained. The narrator never replied, but she kept the letter. That autumn, she cooked one meal for herself and realized she had mistaken patience for love. She finally chose herself.
