Many drivers notice small raised plastic tabs between the cup holders in their car without realizing they serve a specific purpose. The narrow gap can easily look like a decorative part of the center console or simply an unusual detail in the cup-holder design.

In many vehicles, however, those two raised supports are actually designed to hold a smartphone. The bottom edge of a phone can be slid into the narrow opening between the tabs, allowing the device to stand upright instead of lying loose somewhere inside the car.

This built-in feature can make a phone easier to see and retrieve when the vehicle is parked. It also provides a convenient alternative to leaving the phone on the passenger seat, dashboard, or inside a cup holder where it could take up valuable space.

The design is particularly useful when both cup holders are needed for drinks. Rather than sacrificing one of them to store a phone, drivers can place the device in the small slot between the supports and keep the cup holders available.

The exact size and usefulness of the slot can vary between vehicles. Some openings may accommodate larger phones and cases, while others may be too narrow for particularly thick devices. The phone should also fit securely rather than being forced into the gap.

Many people never discover the feature because the supports are designed to blend into the surrounding console. Since they do not look like a traditional phone holder, drivers may assume they are simply structural or decorative pieces of the cup-holder assembly.

Once someone points out their purpose, the design suddenly makes much more sense. What appears to be an unnecessary gap is actually a small piece of practical engineering intended to give drivers another convenient place for their phone.

It is a good example of how modern vehicles can contain useful features that remain hidden in plain sight. That tiny space between the cup holders may have been there for years, quietly serving as a built-in smartphone holder without many drivers ever realizing what it was designed to do.
