Phoebe Cates is best known for her breakout role as Kate Beringer in Gremlins and for her earlier performance in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which made her one of the most recognizable young actors of the 1980s. Her work in teen films and comedies helped define that era of Hollywood.

Born in New York City in 1963, she initially trained in dance before a knee injury shifted her path toward modeling and acting. She went on to appear in a small but memorable number of films over about a decade, including Drop Dead Fred and Princess Caraboo.

Despite her early success, she gradually stepped away from acting in the mid-1990s. Her final major film appearance was in The Anniversary Party (2001), after which she largely retired from Hollywood.

The main reason for her departure was personal choice. Cates chose to focus on her family life with actor Kevin Kline, whom she married in 1989. The couple has two children, and she has often prioritized raising them over continuing a full-time acting career.

Later in life, she shifted her attention to business, opening a boutique called Blue Tree in New York City. The store reflects her long-standing interest in art, design, and unique retail items rather than film industry work.

Although she no longer appears frequently on screen, she has occasionally taken small roles or voice work connected to earlier projects. She remains best remembered for her iconic 1980s performances, especially in Gremlins and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
