My Mom Told Me Not to Wear My Wedding Dress Because “It Would Outshine My Sister’s” — At My Own Wedding

I thought the hardest part of planning my wedding would be the seating chart. But the real challenge was protecting my joy from those who were supposed to support it.

When I found the dress, I felt radiant. My sister Jane loved it. My mother, however, frowned. “What if you outshine your sister?” she said.

Weeks passed. Mom focused more on Jane than on me—the bride. But nothing prepared me for the wedding day, when Jane walked in wearing a white, bridal-style dress.

I was crushed. Then, during her toast, Jane broke down. She admitted Mom had convinced her she’d be overshadowed. “But all I’ve ever wanted was to be more like you,” she said. She left and returned in a navy dress.

In that moment, she chose me.

Later, I told Mom, “You should’ve lifted us both up.” I didn’t shrink that day—I stood tall. I wore that dress not to be seen, but to truly see myself.
