New Pope Leo’s comments about Trump policies resurface after he’s named first American pope in history

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, made history as the first American pope, drawing praise from President Donald Trump, who called his election a “Great Honor for our Country.”

However, Trump’s celebratory post on Truth Social contrasts sharply with the pope’s past criticisms of his policies. Prevost has previously reposted tweets condemning Trump-era immigration actions like family separations and deportations, calling them “morally indefensible.”

He also criticized Vice President JD Vance’s stance on prioritizing love for fellow Americans over others, sharing a headline that read, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.”

While Trump welcomed Prevost’s rise to the papacy, these resurfaced posts hint at possible tension between the Vatican and the current U.S. administration.
