Scientists warn that Mount Spurr, one of America’s most dangerous volcanoes, may erupt soon. Located 80 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska, it has shown signs of increased activity, with experts predicting an eruption within weeks or months.
Experts say Mount Spurr is displaying typical signs of an impending eruption, including seismic activity and volcanic gas emissions. “All four indicators are present,” says Matt Haney of the Alaska Volcano Observatory.
While the exact timing is unclear, scientists believe an eruption is likely. The volcano is currently on a Level Yellow alert, indicating increased unrest but no immediate danger.
An eruption could lead to ashfall, mudflows, and pyroclastic flows. While no nearby towns are at risk, hikers and tourists are advised to stay informed.
Mount Spurr has erupted multiple times in the past, including in 1953 and 1992, disrupting Anchorage and air traffic. Residents of South Central Alaska are urged to prepare for potential risks.
