Some lessons bear repeating—like the dangers of distracted driving. Despite widespread awareness, tragedy can still strike, as it did in 2014 when 32-year-old Courtney Sanford lost her life moments after posting to Facebook while driving.
At 8:33 a.m., she updated her status: “The happy song makes me so HAPPY.” Just one minute later, her car veered across a highway median and collided head-on with a recycling truck, bursting into flames. Courtney died at the scene.
Police found no signs of drugs, alcohol, or speeding. The crash, they said, was a stark warning about texting and driving.
“In a matter of seconds, a life was over,” said Lt. Chris Weisner. “It’s really not worth it.”
The truck driver, 73-year-old John Wallace Thompson, was unharmed.
Courtney’s heartbreaking story is a reminder that a moment of distraction behind the wheel can have irreversible consequences. No message is worth a life.
