Teen Prom King, 17, passes away only an hour after being reported missing

Tragedy at Rathbun Lake

Earlier this summer, the community of Appanoose County, Iowa, was shaken by the loss of 17-year-old Ayden Beeson, a beloved high school student and recently crowned Prom King. On June 26, 2024, Ayden disappeared while swimming at Rathbun Lake.

A 911 caller reported a possible drowning, prompting an immediate response from the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office and the Water Rescue unit. Teams searched tirelessly, but just an hour later, Ayden’s body was recovered from 15 to 20 feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The news sent shockwaves through the Centerville School District, where Ayden was admired for his leadership and kindness. Known as a football standout and tennis player, he had a reputation for uplifting those around him.

Superintendent Mark Taylor spoke to the depth of the community’s grief: “Such a great kid lost in the prime of his life is devastating for our community, for his family, and for the lives he was going to impact. He was kind to everyone. There wasn’t a single person he couldn’t be nice to.”

Friends remembered Ayden as both a teammate and a loyal friend, someone who balanced athletic success with a warm, approachable personality. His classmates voted him Prom King earlier in the year, a recognition of the respect and affection he earned.

The tragedy has underscored the importance of water safety, as Rathbun Lake—though popular for recreation—has seen previous incidents. Authorities continue to remind visitors to take precautions when swimming.

For Ayden’s family and community, the loss feels immeasurable. What should have been a joyful summer turned into heartbreak, with memories of a young man gone far too soon.

Though his life was cut short, Ayden’s legacy of kindness, leadership, and friendship will live on in the community he touched so deeply.
